Pharmacy Technician

Pharmacy technicians play a key role in providing patients with quality health care services.

They work closely with pharmacy assistants and pharmacists to ensure that the correct medication is prepared and delivered to the patients, and handle the operational and technical services within the Pharmacy department.

Education


Pharmacy technician certificate or diploma

Duties

  • Transcribe new medication therapy orders, changes or refills into patient files, and fill, prepare, and/or package the medications
  • Compound sterile products and may prepare specialty items such as epidurals, chemotherapy, and investigational drugs
  • Maintain records such as ward stock, drug inventories, and various drug registries

Make a Difference

  • Ensure patients receive the proper medication and amount
  • Reviewing drug use and monitoring
  • Maintain inventory quantity and integrity, ensuring expired or recalled drugs are removed from shelves
  • Provide basic drug information and education to other healthcare professionals, patients, and caregivers

Work Collaboratively

  • Work as part of a collaborative team with pharmacists, pharmacy assistants, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals
  • Pharmacy technicians work primarily in hospital pharmacies
