Safe surgical equipment

Surgical Processors, also referred to as medical device reprocessing technicians or sterile processing technicians, perform an essential service within the health care setting: the provision of safe surgical equipment. They assemble and provide surgical supply sets and carts as ordered for scheduled and emergency surgeries, and ensure equipment functionality and proper stock levels are maintained.

Duties

  • Collect, disassemble, decontaminate, disinfect, assemble, function test, sterilize, package, store and distribute instruments, equipment and supplies used in surgical units
  • Operate and maintain a variety of equipment used to process surgical instruments, maintain sanitary workspace
  • Assemble and provide surgical supply sets and carts as ordered for scheduled and emergency surgeries
  • Inspecting and maintaining stock and functionality of supplies

Make a Difference

  • Prevent the spread of illness-causing bacteria through proper cleaning and sanitation procedures
  • Ensure that medical sharps, such as scalpels, are sharp and ready for use
  • Assemble and provide surgical supply sets and carts as ordered for scheduled and emergency surgeries
  • May provide leadership and guidance to other surgical processors, students and other health care staff

Work Collaboratively

  • While surgical processors often work independently, they also work alongside other surgical processors, physicians, nurses, and oher health care workers
  • Work in a variety of settings, including hospitals surgical departments, endoscopy units, and central sterile processing areas
